Toner Tuner, one of the Working Software Printing Utilities, allows you to save toner or ink when making draft prints. It works by printing drafts in light gray. It works with QuickDraw and PostScript printers - ink jet or laser printers, and it works with System 6 and System 7.
Toner Tuner was reviewed in the December, 1993 Macworld, page 79, and is in the December 1993 MacUser 100. Other Working Software Printing Utilities include Working Watermarker¬, Working PrintLogger¬, and Working PrintStamper¬. (Working Watermarker is reviewed in the January 1994 Macworld, page 59).
This demo works just like Tuner Tuner, but it prints obnoxious information in the center of each "Toner-Tuned" page :-) :-). This only happens when you turn Toner Tuner on in the Print dialog - it won't affect your regular printouts.
To try out the demo, drag the Toner Tuner into your System Folder (it should go into the Extensions Folder if you use System 7), then restart your Macintosh.
After restarting, print a document from one of your applications. Toner Tuner adds some items to the print dialog. Use the slider bar to adjust the print darkness, and check the "Use TT" checkbox to turn it on for this print. The slider bar setting is remembered between prints.
Shortcut: hold the Option key when you press Return, or click Print, to turn Toner Tuner on.
Secret Stuff: Edit the "TTPf" resource in Toner Tuner to have the "Use TT" checkbox default to on. We include a ResEdit template to make this easier. The installer for the real product allows this as an option.
Ñ Application Compatibility
Certain applications do not use standard Macintosh print dialogs. For this reason, the Toner Tuner control may not appear when you print from these applications.
Currently, Toner Tuner does not appear in the print dialogs of the following programs: Microsoft Works 2.0 and ReadySetGo! 4.0. Toner Tuner does appear in Microsoft Works 3.0 and later versions of ReadySetGo!.
To use Toner Tuner with Aldus PageMaker 5.0 you must select Background Printing On from the LaserWriter dialog in the Chooser desk accessory. Nothing special is required to use Toner Tuner with PageMaker 4.0.
Ñ Printer Compatibility
Toner Tuner works with most printers, but some printers will not respond to Toner Tuner's command to lighten their printouts.
HP DeskWriter owners must use version 2.2 of the DeskWriter driver software on black and white DeskWriters. Later versions of the black and white DeskWriter, and all versions of the color DeskWriter do not dim their printouts. We are working closely with HP on resolving this problem.
Some versions of the Xante Accel-A-Writer upgrade board for the LaserWriter II will not work with Toner Tuner. We are also working with Xante to fix this. It does work for most Accel-A-Writer users.
